“Winning the press conference” is one of the strangest judgments in sports. A new manager will stand up in front of reporters and project confidence, and it doesn’t matter to future wins and losses. Some new coaches who know how to answer questions well have failed to lead the 1989 San Francisco 49ers to a winning record.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t win his introductory press conference, whatever that means. Fans cringed and laughed at Sirianni that he fumbled with an answer about “systems.”
And it didn’t matter at all for victories and defeats.
In Sirianni’s second season he is, at least by one measure, the best coach in the NFL. Or at least have the best season. Sirianni is the easy favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year on BetMGM. The Eagles are 10-1 and Sirianni is doing a great job.
His systems worked, apparently.
Nick Sirianni is the favorite to win coach of the year
Here are the current BetMGM Manager of the Year odds, with Sirianni holding a huge lead:
Mike McDaniel, Dolphins of Miami +450
Robert Saleh, New York Jets +500
Kevin O’Connell, Minnesota Vikings +550
These are the four contenders, according to the odds. Every other trainer is +1600 or more.
There is plenty of time to flip. Brian Daboll (+1600) seemed like a good bet a few weeks ago, but the hype about the New York Giants’ entertaining start has dissipated with a pair of losses. If the Giants start another run, that buzz will pick up again. Someone like Mike McCarthy (+1800) should draw attention if the Dallas Cowboys beat the Eagles for the NFC East.
Many things can change in the final weeks of the season, but what won’t change is that the Eagles must be happy with the signing of Sirianni. In Sirianni’s first year, he completely changed his offense after a slow start, leaning into a heavy offense and the Eagles reached the playoffs. This season the Eagles weren’t even favorites to win the NFC East, but they have the best record in the NFL.
Sirianni is already showing an ability to understand what his players do best and position them to succeed.
The Eagles are having a great season
Winning coach of the year doesn’t mean you’re a superstar. Matt Nagy and Jason Garrett are among the award winners more recently than Bill Belichick or Andy Reid.
However, it seems that Sirianni is perfect. He has a fiery personality which officials may not like but which his players seem to respect. He’s done a great job getting the most out of Eagles talent, including quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles, at +600, are tied for the third-best Super Bowl odds. At this point it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Eagles play in February.
Sirianni’s -140 odds of winning the NFL Coach of the Year mean it’s his award that he loses. If the Eagles land the No. 1 seed in the NFC — they have a 79.5 percent chance of doing so, according to Football Outsiders — then Sirianni will get a lot of votes. The race isn’t over, but Sirianni has a big advantage.
And no matter if Sirianni wins the award, her future looks bright.
